Birds.
I used to love the birds, twiddling talons, twitting talk
Until you came along, a ravaging pioneer, thoughtless hawk
How can you, somehow you did, an entire species to the wind
Hollow keel shaped bones, no more, flown away, lost to you in the end
Let me drink to that, something bitter, pomegranate- after taste of sparrow
It bites, sweet and peppered, if I could shoot them down, trenchant arrow...
They only remind me of you, feathered freaks, charged with carelessness
If they all fell down, million missiles, plunging blood, marvelous
How do I go outside, it is all you, everywhere, every mocking bird
The littoral zone, reflecting bird bellies, an acrid taste, hurt
I'll feed you my heart, if the birds go away, migrate to hell or heaven, I don't care
Why birds, they're all consuming, the little one perched on the stair
Goodnight, even the owl, with eyes like yours, Barred, Boreal, Great Gray
Makes me vomit, perhaps hunt me instead, if I can't take away the birds, put my mind at bay
Maybe one day, I'll go watching again, returned to seduction of the Swift
Carried back to you my love, perhaps never, flown away, lost to you in the end.
