Half Light
Do you ever see him in the half light
Standing
At the edge
And he turns
With his finger to his lips
And points across the canyon
To the sun
Which is suspended
Over the city
Propped up by smoke
And purple
And the sun is blinding
But he is much more beautiful
And if he were to be
Betrothed to anyone
Only the sun would be good enough
Only the sun
For him.
So you ask him
Would you ever marry her
And he says
"What a magnificent bride
She would be
But I am not good enough for the sun
I am barely good enough
For the life she has given me."
And I try to persuade him
That he would make a brilliant groom
For what wife
Would not want for her husband
To simply stand and adore her
Silencing all others
Bitter at the sign of stars
Bitter at the night
And joyous upon the rise
Of his lover.
